A View Across the Green: Thames Ditton House Refurbishment

Greg and Lilianne chose this home for its incredible location and uninterrupted views across the Thames Ditton Cricket Green. The focus of the renovation was to completely open up the ground floor, creating a light-filled, double-aspect living space with views to both the front and rear gardens. A modest single-storey rear extension was added to accommodate a utility room and a sun-filled garden room.

Working closely with Greg and Lilianne, Model Projects reimagined the layout, transforming four previously separated rooms into one expansive open-plan area, while retaining a separate formal living room for quieter moments. Each area within the open-plan space is subtly defined using carefully chosen modern furniture and lighting. A hidden perimeter lighting feature casts a warm ambient glow around the ceiling, while recessed spotlights offer functional task lighting in the heart of the room.

Kitchen Design and Features

The kitchen runs from the front to the rear of the house and is designed in a contemporary style, with handleless cupboards and brass feature lighting above a large central island. The island includes a hob, a small sink, integrated storage, and seating for four. It also provides a clear division between the kitchen and the seating and dining areas beyond.

At the rear of the house, two distinct zones have been created for the family to enjoy: a dining area and a cosy seating space. Both overlook the garden through bifolding doors, offering a seamless view onto the terrace and greenery beyond. The internal flooring has been carefully matched with that of the garden terrace, creating a continuous inside-outside living space during the summer months.

The existing staircase was updated to become a focal point in the entrance hallway. A glass balustrade and white treads complement the style and colour palette of the kitchen next door, enhancing the overall sense of cohesion.

A new extension to the rear of the garage accommodates a utility room and sunroom overlooking the garden. This has been connected to the main house, creating a smooth integration between the home and garage.

 

Route to Planning

A full householder application was submitted for the project.
